2 Small Asteroids Zoom Between Earth and Moon's Orbit

Space.com- A small asteroid zipped by Earth well inside the orbit of the moon today (Sept. 30),  the second space rock encounter for our planet this week. Both asteroids posed no threat to Earth, scientists say.

"Small asteroid 2011 SM173 just passed Earth at a safe distance of 180,000 miles (290,000 km or .8 lunar distance)," scientists with NASA's Asteroid Watch program announced in a Twitter post today.

Asteroid 2011 SM173 was discovered yesterday by astronomers and is about 56 feet (17 meters) wide, making it about the size of a house. Its flyby came just four days after the pass of another space rock — the asteroid 2011 SE58 —which actually came even closer to Earth. [Photo of asteroid 2011 SM173's orbit]

The 33-foot (10-m) wide asteroid 2011 SE58 slipped within 147,000 miles (236,573 km) of Earth during an evening flyby on Monday (Sept. 26), according to Asteroid Watch scientists.

The average distance between Earth and the moon is about 238,900 miles (384,402 km).

No threat to Earth

Both asteroids were too small to threaten Earth with a serious impact. If they had barreled into Earth, they likely would have burned up completely in Earth's atmosphere, the researchers said.

"Rocky asteroids the size of 2011 SE58 are not considered hazardous as they break up in the atmosphere & cause no ground damage," Asteroid Watch scientists wrote.

Asteroid 2011 SE58 was discovered by skywatchers on Sept. 21, according to database maintained by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif.

By coincidence, the asteroid flybys this week occurred just as NASA announced the latest results from its efforts to find the largest near-Earth asteroids, objects that could potentially endanger Earth.
NASA's asteroid census has discovered about 90 percent of the largest near-Earth asteroids and revealed that the population of mid-size space rocks (asteroids about 3,300 feet, or 1,006 m, wide) is far lower than previously thought.
Astronomers using NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Telescope (WISE), which mapped the night sky twice between January 2010 and February 2011, found that there are about 19,500 medium-size asteroids that can fly near Earth. That number is a steep drop from astronomers' initial estimate of about 35,000 such asteroids, NASA scientists said Thursday (Sept. 29). [Video: Killer Asteroids, We're WISE to You Now]

Frequent flybys

Scientists with NASA's Near-Earth Object program at the JPL have said that small asteroids like 2011 SM173 and 2011 SE58 can be expected to pass by Earth on a daily basis. But the asteroids pose no threat to the planet because of their small size.

Bigger asteroids — those about 460 feet (140 m) wide — can cause widespread damage around their impact sites if they slam into Earth. But it would take a strike from a much larger space rock to cause global devastation, scientists have said.

On Thursday, NASA announced that there are fewer of those giant asteroids in the solar system as well.
Astronomers initially estimated that there were about 1,000 mountain-size asteroids in orbits that brought the space rocks near Earth. Using the WISE observations, scientists were able to lower that number to 981, with 911 of those asteroids already known and well-tracked.

NASA scientists and astronomers around the world keep a constant watch on the skies for potentially dangerous asteroids.

The next object expected to fly close by Earth will be asteroid 2009 TM8, which will pass just inside the moon's orbit when it flies by. The asteroid last whipped by Earth in 2009, when it came within 216,000 miles (348,000 km) of the planet.

Asteroid 2009 TM8 was discovered by skywatchers shortly before its 2009 flyby. It is also tiny, measuring just 30 feet (7 m) across, and poses no threat to Earth, astronomers have said.

Was driving my son to school at 8am on sept.29th 2011 travaling south on frontage I 130 between Gattis School Rd and Kelly lane .My son told me he could see something in the sky travaling way to fast to be a plane.We see planes all the time around here.I looked out the window towards the west and saw something in the sky zooming by as fast as a missile and leaving a vapor trail behind it. I did not see the object but my son (who is 12)said it was a solid white sphere with what appeared to be 2 wings protruding diagonaly from beneath it .He watched it descending untill it disapeared from his view at the underpath to I45. He woundered if it was part of the satalite that fell to earth on sat.sept.24th but did not hear anything on the local news.Has anyone else reported seeing anything?

About a half hour after noon, my coworkers and I obeserved an unknown object in the great Clear Lake area of Houston, TX. close to the NASA complex. Observed a white boomerang like object tumble through the sky in a horizontal line, descending slightly as it moved across the sky. It seemed to get smaller as we observed it. We looked away, for no more than five to ten seconds, looked back and it was gone. It was moving east to west at approx. 45 degrees above the horizon.

Summary:    Red/orange lightys , three groups of four passed directly overhead. Very bright , pretty lights, no sound, no flashing or rotating, directly overhead in clear stary sky, mover off to the north east.

Just after the 10:00 oclock news came on the TV, July 2,2011, I went outside and from my front porch I looked up and saw four very pretty red lights in the sky. I went in and got my wife and had her come out and look. We went out the back door because the lights were moving in that direction. They were directly overhead in a clear stary sky. We watched as they moved off to the northeast. We looked back and four more were comming. No sound, no flashing or rotating like an aircraft beacon. These four moved off following the first four. Then four more came and followed the others. They were directly overhead, I would guess at about 500 to 800 feet. We watched them fly away toward the northeast very slowly wntil they all disappeared out of sight, probably 15 to 20 miles away. They were getting higher in the sky as they flew away.
Later I went to the gas station to get a news paper and I ask the clerk if he saw the lights, he said yes, we all saw them and wondered what they were. And thats my question too. what were they. I was a pilot and flight instructor when I was younger, I am now 73 years old and I have seen a lot, but I have no explaination for what I saw. just red lights flying by themselves, twelve lights following each other, not in a stright line, not all at exactly the same altitude, but maintaining the same position as a group slowly, silently moving away.
If you have an answer I would sure like to know it.

I was driving with friends down to portmansfield my father is a famous fisherman who we were visiting we were about an hour an a half away where its all brush country ''King Ranch Area''
When i first say it i didn't think that much i thought is some type of communication tower...as we drove closure i could literally see there was nothing! nothing holding it up...it literally was a Pure white sphere except the bottom seems to be more tucked in i guess or more skinner...what first amazed me was the fact of this thing looked like it was just ''stuck'' in the sky. i was not afraid of that...what made all my hair stand up was the fact that this sphere that turned side ways slowly and i swear on everything holy it took off so fast! it left a kinda clear trial when it ''went'' where is went. Now I am a 25yr old former Marine. and the man that was with me is a high caliber man that works for the government with his two sons...his two sons were saying look over and over again to there dad...i know he saw it but he is a huge Cristian and by the look on his eyes i think he was trying to block it out.
I tried to rationalize the thing but i couldn't a buddy who used to work on predator drones i went to military school with before the military assured me '' we got nothing like that and no human could survive going that fast faster then a blink of an eye.
before i called him i tried think maybe it was a balloon....but the thing stayed perfectly still...the wind was blowing south east at the time and it took off against the wind...no balloon can do this.....Can someone please help me try and identify this PLEASE!? its OK to text me before you call my name is [name removed by SW/LITS] but call me [number removed by SW/LITS]   [number removed by SW/LITS]    .....i study and research UFO's my whole life and i used to believe but seeing this i know for a fact...once you see something like this there is no rationalizing

Witness Claims UFO Aerial 'Dogfight' Over Paris, Texas

A witness reports that at about 2:00 a.m. on the morning of September 9, 2011, they walked outside to make sure their car was locked.

It was then that they watched what appeared to be an aerial dogfight over the town of Paris, Texas, between a blue glowing orb, a white orb and a red orb, each shooting "beams" at the other.  The aerial combat lasted about 5 minutes.

I walked outside at About 2Am or so to make sure my car was locked, And I seen this weird blue glowing orb , shooting across the sky towards a stationary White orb and a Weird Redish glowing orb and then if that wasnt weird I watched the Blue orb shoot off something that look like a beam or something at the red orb then the red orb kinda shot off for abt 30 secs and the white or turned a redish color all about the same time and the blue and red or started what looked like shooting lights at each other after about 1 minute of this i watched the sky in the direction kinda flash like thunder for abt 5 seconds and these things were moving in weird directions stopping and then changing direction, after the flashing the red orb was gone and a second orb appeared it was red also i assume it was the first red orb that dissapeared. and they both shot off toward the NE , all of this sorta lasted id say 5 minutes. was kinda like a Dogfight.

Where Astronauts Did Tread... Aside from the Moon

NASA and the Navajo

When NASA was preparing for the Apollo Project, it took the astronauts to a Navajo reservation in Arizona for training.

One day, a Navajo elder and his son came across the space crew walking among the rocks.

The elder, who spoke only Navajo, asked a question.

His son translated for the NASA people: "What are these guys in the big suits doing?"

One of the astronauts said that they were practicing for a trip to the moon.

When his son relayed this comment the Navajo elder got all excited and asked if it would be possible to give to the astronauts a message to deliver to the moon.

Recognizing a promotional opportunity when he saw one, a NASA official accompanying the astronauts said, "Why certainly!" and told an underling to get a tape recorder.

The Navajo elder's comments into the microphone were brief. The NASA official asked the son if he would translate what his father had said.

The son listened to the recording and laughed uproariously. But he refused to translate. So the NASA people took the tape to a nearby Navajo village and played it for other members of the tribe. They too laughed long and loudly but also refused to translate the elder's message to the moon.

Finally, an official government translator was summoned. After he finally stopped laughing the translator relayed the message:

"Watch out for these assholes. They have come to steal your land."

Well, that's a pretty darn good joke but does it have any validity?

Astronauts actually trained at places such as Schooner and Sedan craters and Buckboard Mesa of the Nevada Test Site.  And yes, they did train at locations such as Cinder Lake crater field, in Arizona.  In fact, astronauts trained at other geologic, desolate locations.

But was the story/joke about the Navajo elder true?  Who knows?

Before Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the moon on July 29, 1969, Armstrong, and astronauts Dick Gordon, Buzz Aldrin, Dave Scott, and Russell Schweikart left their footprints on the Nevada Test Site as part of their lunar training.

Their three-day visit began on February 16, 1965. It was the first training mission by a group of astronauts from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Their mission was to carry out geological and geophysical studies at Sedan crater, Buckboard Mesa and Schooner crater, which later aided the astronauts in observing and collecting material from the moon's surface, and helping expand knowledge and understanding about our solar system.

Landed Disc UFO Mimicks Campfire

Description:    Nighttime landed domed craft in a rural farm field

I drove a Ford cargo van for an over nite delivery company in Indianapolis in 2006. My route had 50 stops and I drove the same route each night traveling about 400 miles each evening.

As I was heading west from US 31 to the town of Culver on a two lane country road around 1:00 am when I came over the top of a hill and down the hill I witnessed something out of the ordinary. What was normally a farm field pasture littered with some implements and a few head of cattle, now appeared to have the orange glow of a campfire.

I thought to myself, that is kind of unusual because it was quite some distance from any residence. As I approached the area, I rolled down the window of the van and stopped to see if this was a campfire or perhaps an accidental fire.

My eye level was about the top of the wire fence and the weeds that had grown up along the fence row.

What I witnessed about twenty feet away gave me chills and caused me a great deal of anxiety.

What I saw was a highly reflective dome just over the top of the weeds about 20'-35'in diameter reflecting the color of the night sky with just the faintest sliver of an outline that defined its shape.

But the weirdest thing about it was, it was mimicking a fire, soft orange and reddish undulations were reflecting off its surface but even stranger were the spark embers that normally float off a fire, they were recreated in a pixel type format, very quick dashes of light that floated in a zigzag geometric pattern making sharp right angles in a multi-sized square track across the surface of the dome. The light even dimmed as to copy an ember burning out.

It was semi-convincing in reproducing a campfire but it was not natural. When I saw that it scared me and I immediately drove off. I was so close to it that I thought if lingered there any longer who knows what might happen.

Report:
I checked out at Wal-Mart at 22:39 and walked out and I remember thinking that it was WAY too early to have Christmas lights out but there they were a dull red, crimson red, really red in the shape of a huge letter H on the mountain between myself and home. I was curious because they didn't look right so I took a different way home that would put me closer to the lights. when I got on the street the car in front of me had spotted the lights and was driving very slowly as was I. I topped a hill and saw some cars coming up behind me at a high rate of speed. There were three police cars running flat out. They may have been going 100 MPH or faster headed in my direction which was South. The "object" was moving a little to the left and a little to the right as if it were looking for something and suddenly (and I do mean very suddenly) it took off to the south at an unbelievable speed and was gone. The police cars had gone over the hill. When it took off I noticed I could see lights on the hill that I could not see before. That's how I estimated the altitude. This thing was huge. The police cars were running silent and without their emergency lights on. I am not 100% positive they were chasing it but Fayetteville was fairly quiet tonight. I got home and called my son who had seen something in the sky in Bentonville headed south that was curious but theoretically explainable because he was farther away than I was. He saw it from the side and I saw it from directly below.

That's it. This thing was really REALLY huge and incredibly fast and in the shape of (of all things) a capital letter "H".

April 8, 2007- It was during their drive home in Austin, Texas, that a couple saw a dark sphere hovering in the sky.  The woman managed to take two photos of the object and wonders what the object could be.

Report:
My husband and I were driving home that afternoon. I was in the passenger seat looking out the window as we approached this greyish-black colored sphere right next to the highway. We were heading East on State Highway 45 Toll Road just passing AW Grimes Blvd. The object was to the left of us about half a mile from us, just above a neighborhood built on the access road to the left of the toll. It was so obvious to us that I couldn't help but stare at it for a few seconds... It was right above the houses, but high enough that I knew it wasn't a balloon. It was larger then a balloon, as the pictures show, about 3-6 feet from what I could tell from the distance... I could not see anything holding it up in the air, nor did I view any other objects near it. As we got closer to the object, I remembered I had our camera in my purse. I quickly grabbed my camera and snapped two pictures. This object, from the way the pictures appear, was low in the sky, about 20-30 feet above the power lines. This object had no light shining off of it, however it seemed to reflect a small area of light from what I am assuming was the Sun's rays. This object made NO NOISE, and as I could tell, did not move, spin, or rotate in any way. It just remained in the sky as if it was just there to settle itself. The texture of this craft/object appeared to be metal looking, more grey then black. As I snapped these pictures, we passed the object and I was able to get a still close up of the object... :) To this day, I do not know what that was and I would love to figure it out! Unfortunately it has been 4 years since I have taken these photos, and all that I have are the files saved from my computer...However, I have been extremely curious as to what I saw, and want clarification and/or an explanation of what it may be...

Summary:    Photo of unknown object with a reflective dome taken while photographing the sun

Report:
I observed this phenomenon only after the fact, since I was photographing the afternoon sun and couldn't look in the area long where the object appeared in the photograph because the sun was so blinding. I didn't have any contact with entities or heard strange noises when I took this image.

I was out trying to capture a decent photograph of the afternoon sun in the southwestern sky through a telephoto lens of my DSLR. After I came back and reviewed my photos, an odd object appeared in one of my images. It neither looks like an airplane or a helicopter, but appears to be a saucer shaped object tilted toward the sun. It also appears to be metallic and seems to be have a dome that reflects the sun's light. I do not know what kind of object this is and it doesn't appear to be any kind of conventional aircraft.

Since my DSLR has a fairly high resolution, I have both a cropped version of the photograph and the original wide angle copy in order to find if there is any type of obvious details that this object has that would give away it's true identity, or verify it as a real UFO.

Summary:    two bright stationary lights north of Lubbock that faded as the sun set

Report:
I was exiting my university facing north at about 745 and right away I noticed two bright what could have been dismissed as stars in the sky. However, it was still bright outside and I am accustomed to the sky and I knew that they weren't stars. I contacted a friend in Austin and he verified that there were no stars north. As I traveled home i would momentarily lose sight but when I got home it appeared as if they didn't move. This took about 15 minutes so I knew they weren't planes, helicopters, or stars because it was brighter than any star I have seen and as the sun began to set the one directly north turned orange and began to disappear and the other just faded. I speculate that it was two objects reflecting the sun since the one closest to the west stayed brighter until the sun set. Me and my roommate looked at google sky and found no charted visibly bright star in that region. I always look at the sky and I can tell you that it wasn't a star, plane, or anything of the sort.

Report:
I was waiting tables at Menchies Restaurant in Amarillo, Texas when a customer walked in stating he had witnessed 2 bright balls in the sky. By the time I got outside 1 had disappeared. Coming back outside within 5 minutes later we both witnessed 2 balls of light in the N Western sky. We also had a couple calls and text messages coming in of witnessed reports. A couple felt it had to do with the falling satellite. I did not feel this was the case obviosly and certainly not a weather ballon as someone thought our local Channel 10 news might have already reported. The balls disappeared and reappeared more than once- at least 3 times over a 20 minute period between 9-10pm September 23rd 2011.

I had no particular feelings other than wandering what these objects really were. Thank you,

A San Antonio resident made the news, when he claimed that on Wednesday, September 14, 2011, he spotted an Unidentified Flying Object and captured it on video.

“I was pointing that way and I saw that object traveling that way, going east,” said Vallejo. “First of all no navigational lights that’s what got my attention at first. Then I started zooming in and I started seeing the different configuration of the lights.”

As of today, his Youtube video has had over 45, 000 views.

Sep-14-2011 a Huge UFO craft was filmed over San Antonio,Tx..As I was facing west I notice this Huge glowing object traveling east.I could clearly see this object was no aircraft .No FAA navigational light's were visible.So i quickly crabbed my camcorder for a closer observation..As i began filming this huge unknown object multiply lights could be seen..This UFO appears to be a solid craft.On the video you can see this object to be emiting some kind of glowing energy.While i was filming unknown,the lights configuration began to change.When zooming in multiply lights were diff were shape... I did not see any FAA lights/hear any noise coming from this unknown object....In my opinion Clearly an UNIDENTIFED FLYING OBJECT..This was an awesome sighting due to as it appears to be One solid object..And the size of this object seemed to be enormous..This huge glowing object was clearly no aircraft or satellite.

(Reuters) - Scientists around the world said on Friday the discovery of sub-atomic particles apparently traveling faster than light could force a major rethink of theories on the makeup of the cosmos, but the findings would first have to be independently confirmed.

"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and this is an extraordinary claim," eminent cosmologist and astrophysicist Martin Rees told Reuters.

The CERN research institute near Geneva said measurements over three years had shown neutrinos pumped to a receiver in Gran Sasso, Italy, had arrived 60 nanoseconds sooner than light would have done -- a tiny difference that could nonetheless undermine Albert Einstein's 1905 special theory of relativity.

"It is premature to comment on this," Professor Stephen Hawking, the world's most well-known physicist, told Reuters. "Further experiments and clarifications are needed."

Professor Jenny Thomas, who works on neutrinos at CERN's friendly rival Fermilab near Chicago in the United States, commented: "The impact of this measurement, were it to be correct, would be huge."
Professor Geoffrey Hall of London's Imperial College, who has worked with CERN, said the

implications of the results were profound, possibly challenging "a fundamental part of our science culture."
CERN's own research director Sergio Bertolucci said if the findings were confirmed -- and at least two separate laboratories are likely to start work on this in the near future -- "it might change our view of physics."

The high level of caution is normal in science where anything that could be a breakthrough discovery, especially overturning well-established thinking, is in principle always checked and rechecked by other researchers.

The discovery would force a rethink of fundamental theories of physics and of the nature of the universe. It would herald a revolution in physics comparable to that caused by Einstein's publication of his Special Theory of Relativity.

In a comment issued by CERN, the world's leading laboratory for particle research on the edge of Geneva, Bertolucci underscored this principle.

"When an experiment finds an apparently unbelievable result and can find no artefact of the measurement to account for it, it is normal to invite broader scrutiny....it is good scientific practice," he said.

The experiment, whose measurements were posted on the scientific website arxiv.org/abs/1109.4897 overnight, found the long enigmatic neutrinos consistently traveling at an average of 60 nanoseconds faster than light.

GHOST PARTICLES

The team, working in an experiment dubbed OPERA, pumped neutrinos -- often called ghost particles because they pass through matter, and human bodies, unnoticed -- from CERN 730 kms (500 miles) to Gran Sasso south of Rome.

Over three years, and from 15,000 neutrino "events," a huge detector at the Italian center deep under mountain rock recorded what OPERA spokesman Antonio Ereditato described as the "startling" findings.
He said his team had high confidence they had measured correctly and excluded any possibility of some outside influence, or artefact, affecting the outcome. "My dream is now that other colleagues find we are right," he added.

In Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity, which underpins the current view of how the universe works, nothing can travel faster than light -- 300,000 kms, or 186,000 miles, per second -- because its mass would become impossibly infinite.

Einstein's theory has been tested thousands of times over the past 106 years and only recently have there been just slight hints that the behavior of some elementary particles of matter might not fit into it.

These hints were detected last year in Fermilab's MINOS experiment with neutrinos, but -- unlike those of OPERA -- were found to be within a normal margin of error.

Fermilab's Thomas, who is likely to be involved in MINOS experiments to check the CERN-Gran Sasso measurements, said if they were correct "it would overturn everything we thought we understood about relativity and the speed of light."

Ereditato, a physicist who also works at the Einstein Institute in the University of Berne, said the potential impact on science "is too large to draw any immediate conclusions or attempt physics interpretations."

SURPRISING WITH MYSTERIES

Also declining to claim a genuine scientific discovery before other researchers had confirmed them, he said the neutrino, whose existence was first confirmed in 1934, "is still surprising us with its mysteries."

Scientific bloggers on the Internet said the particle might be slipping into and out of dimensions, other than the known four of length, breadth, depth and time, as predicted by the controversial "string theory" of how the cosmos works.

The OPERA team is due to formally present its findings to the scientific community later on Friday at CERN, home to the Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, which is smashing particles together in research on how the universe began.

UARS satellite return expected later

(BBC News)- US officials now say the fall to Earth of Nasa's six-tonne UARS satellite could occur early on Saturday (GMT).

Estimates of where debris might fall will be narrowed hours before impact.

And a UK team studying the trajectory says the most likely time for re-entry could be after 23:00 GMT Friday, and as late as 03:00 GMT on Saturday.

Most of the decommissioned and now unpowered spacecraft should simply burn up, but modelling work suggests perhaps 500kg could survive to the surface.

UARS is the largest American space agency satellite to return uncontrolled into the atmosphere in about 30 years.

As of 15:30 GMT on Friday, the satellite was orbiting at an altitude between 160km and 170km (100 miles by 105 miles).

If the estimates for its re-entry are correct, it means the spacecraft will not come in over North America.

"The spacecraft orbits the Earth in 90 minutes, so even if we're off by a few minutes in the prediction - that's thousands of kilometres down range," said Mark Matney, an orbital debris scientist from Nasa's Johnson Space Center.

"We'll be able to know generally a few hours before, but we'll only get a final report after it re-enters. Even then, we won't know where the pieces fall because they'll be scattered over a 500-mile path," he told BBC News.

The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) will start to tumble rapidly when it engages the top of the atmosphere, about 80km up.

Mechanical forces will rip off less robust structures such as the solar array and antennas.

The heating that the satellite then experiences as it plunges deeper into the atmosphere will start to deform and melt low-temperature materials and then vaporise them.

Components expected to survive are made from high-temperature metals such as stainless steel, titanium and beryllium.

Some 26 items have been suggested as impactors. The largest is one of UARS' instrument tables and weighs over 150kg.
With more than 70% of the Earth's surface covered by water, the chances are that any debris will fall into the ocean.

But if the re-entry does occur over populated areas of land, it should make for a spectacular streak across the sky, even in daylight.

The British Kettering Group of amateur satellite observers has been running predictions based on orbital data released by US authorities.

The group's latest estimates put a re-entry somewhere between 23:00 GMT and 15:00 GMT (00:00-16:00 BST).

"Statistically speaking, the most likely epitaph for the satellite is UARS R.I.P. (Remains In Pacific)," said group member Dr Stuart Eves.

"But there is still a chance that observers in the UK with clear skies could be treated to a 'fireball' display moving generally from north-west to south-east across the sky."

The UARS satellite was deployed in 1991 from the space shuttle Discovery on a mission to study the Earth's upper atmosphere.

It contributed important new understanding on subjects such as the chemistry of the protective ozone layer and the cooling effect volcanoes can exert on the global climate.

Liability question
 
Nasa has warned members of the public not to touch any pieces of the spacecraft that may survive the re-entry, urging them to contact local law enforcement authorities.

"I've seen some things that have re-entered and they tend to have sharp edges, so there's a little concern that they might hurt themselves if they try to pick them up," said Dr Matney.

Experts have calculated the probability of anyone anywhere on Earth being injured by a falling UARS component as 1 in 3,200.

Under the terms of the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, the US government retains ownership of the debris and could, if it so wished, seek to take possession of any items found on the ground.

With those ownership rights also comes absolute liability if a piece of UARS were to damage property or injure someone.

"There is something called international responsibility; they're internationally liable," explained Joanne Wheeler of law firm CMS Cameron McKenna, and an expert representative for the UK on the UN Subcommittee for the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

"The Americans have to retain jurisdiction and control, and that pretty much can be interpreted as ownership. So they own it up there, they own it if it comes down to Earth and they're liable if it crashes into something."
Tracking stations will typically witness the uncontrolled return of at least one piece of space debris every day; and on average, one intact defunct spacecraft or old rocket body will come back into the atmosphere every week.

Something the size of UARS is seen perhaps once a year. Much larger objects such as space station cargo ships return from orbit several times a year, but they are equipped with thrusters capable of guiding their dive into a remote part of the Southern Ocean.

"Total Recall" not so far fetched?

Scientists Can (Almost) Read Your Mind, Turn Thoughts into Movies

(Techland.Time.com)- Mind, prepare to be blown—and scanned, by a device that can almost read thoughts, or at least digitize them into almost-identifiable images. No, it's not some artsy video project, it's for real: a system developed by University of California Berkeley scientists to capture visual activity in our brains and reassemble it as recognizable video data.

It sounds like science fiction, but it's not, and according to the scientists, it represents a "critical" step toward reconstructing everything from what we're thinking while awake to what's happening as we dream.

That's a video of the process up top. A test subject is undergoing an MRI while watching random video clips from Hollywood movies. On the left side, you see clips from what the subject viewed. On the right, you see the fMRI results of "quantitative modeling" using "a new motion-energy encoding model," essentially a matchup of brain activity with the viewed images. As you can see, at worst, it's capable of reconstructing what was viewed in terms of the video image's elemental geometry, e.g. broad shapes, lights and darks, etc. And at best, you can make out identifiable human forms and even vague facial features. (Interestingly, the human-related images seem the least abstruse, which, perhaps—wild speculation on my part here—says something about species-related bias in our recognition patterns.)

Here's the research team's "intuitive" description of the process:

As you move through the world or you watch a movie, a dynamic, ever-changing pattern of activity is evoked in the brain. The goal of movie reconstruction is to use the evoked activity to recreate the movie you observed. To do this, we create encoding models that describe how movies are transformed into brain activity, and then we use those models to decode brain activity and reconstruct the stimulus. 

"This is a major leap toward reconstructing internal imagery," said U.C. Berkeley neuroscientist Jack Gallant, a coauthor of the study published yesterday in the journal Current Biology (via U.C. Berkeley News Center). "We are opening a window into the movies in our minds."

How'd they do it? Volunteers remained still within the MRI scanner for several hours and watched two sets of Hollywood movie trailers. Blood flow through the visual cortex was measured and their brains divided into tiny three-dimensional cubes (no, not literally—on the computer!) called volumetric pixels...or as I first heard them described in gaming parlance decades ago, "voxels" (remember the Comanche attack helicopter series?).

Researchers created a computer model that describes how visual information translates as brain activity, then applied it to each "brain voxel." As volunteers watched the first set of movie clips, their brain activity was processed by the computer to "learn" to associate visual patterns in the clips with corresponding brain activity. 

Brain activity from viewing the second set of clips was then used to test the computer's reconstruction algorithm—the computer used 18 million seconds (5,000 hours) of random YouTube videos that didn't include the movies viewed by the test subjects to build a kind of "reference library," correlating the brain imagery with video clip imagery.

In the final step, the computer selected the 100 clips that were most like the ones the subjects had watched and combined them to form the movie you see above (the right-side feed)—an indirect way of going about it, to be sure, but astonishing for what it accomplishes.

We're probably a ways from science fiction movies like Strange Days, where "Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices" record events direct from a wearer's cerebral cortex and can translate them to others as if they were experiencing the same events firsthand—but with results like these, where computers can "learn" to accurately relate what was seen with how the brain recorded it, we're definitely getting closer.

Last Night 9/19/2011 at around 9:50PM, I just happened to be sitting outside in a chair looking at the stars only for a moment, and then from the North (over my house) about 10 or so tannish/grayish colored triangular objects went from the North to south and out of my view.

The objects had no lights but I could see them because they were lighter color wise than the background sky. I consider my an amateur astronomer, and I have a decent telescope, and I do look at the sky quite often, and I have never seen anything like this. After I calmed down I tried to make a mental note of what I saw.

The objects looked quite similar to a Stealth bomber with triangular long wings, but had no lights but I could seem them very easily kind of like the ground clutter light made them to be seen???, also no sound at all before, during or after they passed and I waited and expected to hear something but heard nothing. They weren't that high in the sky, so I was expecting some noise.

Anyway, I usually don't say or do anything when I may have seen something in the sky, but this time, I had an eery feeling about what I saw.

I just also saw that someone in Dallas saw similar objects last night posted on this website.

Sailor Reports Same Object Seen Twice During U.S. Naval Exercises In Bahamas - 1998

In 1998, while  aboard a U.S. Naval Destroyer on 'exercise in the Bahamas, a sailor observed lights near the vessel.  Here is that report, which was recently submitted to MUFON.

Report:
At the time if the incident(s) I was serving on board a U.S. Navy Destroyer, and we were sent out to sea around Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands in the Bahamas for Naval missile and bombing war exercises. The first incident took place during an unrep (taking on fuel, which means pulling along side a tanker ship while still in motion). It was a night unrep, I only ever partook in day unreps. I was assigned with a few of my shipmates on the flight deck, getting ready to receive a distance line that the crew from the tanker was about to shoot over to us, so we weren't too busy at the time. I was looking around at the tanker and I noticed that their mast had an unusual large amount of lights, as I continued to look at the mast I noticed a formation of about 6 white orb like lights had separated from the tankers mast lights and that's when I realized that it was a aircraft following us, the lights seemed to be in an arch-like formation from my point of view. And it seemed very interested in what we were up to. I looked around the deck of the ship to see if anyone else was seeing this, but everyone was too busy with their assigned jobs. During an unrep it's all hands on deck, the entire crew has to help out. I knew we were the only ships in the area, and it wasn't our helo (helicopter) because our's was in the hanger, and the tankers helicopter was secured on their flight deck. When I finally decided to tell my shipmates to look at what I was seeing, I pointed at it, and suddenly one light went off, then the next one, then the rest in order, it was as if it realized I seen it, anyway my shipmates didn't see it, and I had to now start working so I put it in the back of my mind.

About a 3 days later I had to start my aft-lookout watch (basically you stand out on the back of the ship looking for surface and air contacts, and report them to combat operations) My watch started right at dusk so there was still light in the sky. We were prepping a old stripped out destroyer with a tracking device for bombing exercises the next day, we were going to sink it. We were DIW (Dead in the water) engines off so the boat crew could board the old destroyer. I remember the water was so calm it was like floating on a mirror. One of my friends came down to have a cigarette and we were so interested in what the boat crew was doing, that I forgot i was on watch so I turned around,and as I did, there it was, the very same aircraft I saw a few nights before. Remember there was still light in the sky, enough to realize that these 6 white orbs seemed to be attached to something, but you could not see any superstructure. I asked my friend if he was seeing this, and he was scared to death. We were both in shock. It had to be about 20ft away from us right over the fantail rails not 10 ft over the water. The lights were bright but not blinding, and guessing had to be about the size of a large tractor-trailer tire. That's the only way i can describe it. The craft itself was at least 20ft in length. It made absolutely no sound, and was completely still. The weird thing was, to me, that it seemed to have been there for while before I first noticed it. And I had the distinct feeling it was waiting for me to come out for my watch. These watches are rotated between my division and it was my turn to have the night watch, and the person that stands the night watch has to be alone all night and into dawn by yourself. No one is allowed on deck at night but the aft-lookout. Anyway after for about 30 seconds of both of us staring at it, it shut it lights off in sequence left to right and just disappeared right before our eyes. I didn't see it fly off in the sky or go underwater, it just vanished. My friend freaked out and ran off leaving me out there all by myself all night. Needless to say, I was terrified and requested to switch to the bridge and take the helm, while my shipmate took my aft-lookout watch. Of course I didn't tell her what happened or what I seen. I did report it to combat operations after it vanished but they said they never saw anything on radar and quickly dismissed my report. It just seemed very interested in our activities. Makes you think huh? I swear this happened and it was definitely not our military technology, I hope we never have to fight against anything like that, because we will be utterly defeated.

Summer 2011 UFO Reports Soar

So what's up with the big increase in UFO reports?

MSNBC- According to an organization that tracks UFO reports, this summer has been an especially busy period for UFO sightings. The Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) noted that sightings increased over the past six weeks, with some states more than doubling their normal numbers.

Are we on the cusp of an alien invasion? Or maybe people just have more time on their hands to spot — and report — strange things in the sky?

MUFON International Director Clifford Clift told Life's Little Mysteries that he's not sure what to make of the data at this point. It could be the start of something big, or it could merely be a computer glitch that accidentally counted some reports twice. Another possibility is that we're simply in the midst of a "UFO flap," one of many periodic increases in sightings over the years.

There are several reasons UFOs might appear in flaps, or clusters. One is that objects in the sky are usually seen by many people, especially when they appear over urban areas. UFOs typically don't hover close to Earth or in someone's back yard; instead, they are often sighted high in the sky — just far enough away so that we can't see details or get sharp photos.

Thus, whatever a particular UFO really is — a plane, a comet, an extraterrestrial spacecraft or something else — that one object or strange light in the sky could trigger hundreds, or even thousands, of reports. And even reports of the same object will probably differ depending on the reporter's perspective.

So if there were hundreds of UFO reports in a state during a given period, it's important to know how those reports were categorized because it might mean hundreds of different UFOs were sighted by single individuals, or that one UFO was sighted by hundreds of people.

There are also psychological and social explanations. Sightings are often fueled by the mass media; people read about mysterious things or see TV shows about them, and interest or concern about them spreads from person to person. It's not that anyone is hoaxing or making up sightings: Research has shown that if you tell people what to look for (a phenomenon called "priming"), people will often see what they are looking for — whether those things exist or not.

As Clift noted, "It's likely that the media and (alien-themed) movies that are coming out, like 'Apollo 18 ' and 'Paul,' are piquing people's interest in UFOs." People hear about UFOs, and for a while they tend to look at the sky more often, wondering if they might have their own sighting. And precisely because people are spending more time looking at the sky, they will for the first time notice (normal) lights and objects that have always been there.

So it may not be that UFOs are actually appearing more often, but instead we're noticing them more. An identical process can be found in the medical field, where an increase in reports of a disease may not represent an increase in the actual number of cases, but instead reflects more public awareness of the disease or better screening techniques. In other words, scientists know that just because more people report a phenomenon does not necessarily mean the phenomenon is occurring more often.

Why might UFOs be seen more often in the summer months? One possibility is that people spend more time outdoors; we spend warm nights outside at parties and barbecues, thus we have more opportunity to notice things in the sky than in the winter when we're inside watching television. That said, Clift pointed out that his organization doesn't normally see such dramatic seasonal increases in reports.

Whether the increase in sightings is rooted in reality, a computer glitch or psychological and social influences remains to be seen. One thing is certain: This is not the first time that UFO reports have increased, and it won't be the last.

UFO sightings increase as do WikiLeaks 'UFO War' reports and call for ET truth

HULIQ- STONEFIELD BEACH, Ore. – President Bill Clinton’s former chief of staff has joined a growing list of influential people who want all world governments to come clean on still unexplained UFO phenomenon; while the European Union reported how “a massive fleet of UFO’s suddenly emerged,” back in 2004.

“It’s time to find out what the truth really is that’s out there. The American people – and the people of the world – want to know, and they can handle the truth,” writes John Podesta in the foreword for “UFOs: Generals, Pilots, and Government Officials go on the Record.” Podesta served as the White House Chief of Staff under President Bill Clinton, and as co-chairman of the “Obama-Biden Transition Project” that focused on prevention and public health. Meanwhile, Julian Assange – the founder of the whistleblower internet platform “WikiLeaks” – made a Sept. 6 statement in Berlin that Wikileaks had posted “251,287 cables on its website Sept. 2,” that included some new UFO details.

Also, earlier this year, Assange spoke briefly “about the subject of UFOs,” on the London based “The Guardian” website, where he referenced these “secret UFO files” as part of “yet-to-be published parts of the cablegate archive.”

Meanwhile, the popular UFO sighting spot at Stonefield Beach – located along a picturesque stretch of the Oregon coast -- has been “over-run” by “people with telescopes,” say locals, due to the recent discovery of “600 new exoplanets” that strengthens views from both Oregon UFO “watchers” and astronomers that we are not alone.

Podesta joins other “credible” people who think once top-secret UFO files need to be released
“As someone interested in the question of UFOs, I think I have always understood the difference between fact and fiction,” writes Podesta in the foreword for Leslie Kean’s book “UFOs: Generals, Pilots, and Government Officials go on the Record.”

In turn, Podesta demands that “the time to pull the curtain back on this subject is long overdue,” while citing how Kean “diligently contended with this perplexing subject for ten years while having to face attitudes of ridicule and denial within government. Yet she persevered, and her book clearly leaves the taboo against taking UFOs seriously with no leg to stand on.”

In turn, Oregon UFO “watchers” here at Stonefield Beach also note that “things are changing because of the recent discovers of new planets in our universe. We’re seeing people stop here to look at the heavens in the same way tourists stop to look at the whales. We now have the blue whales competing with UFO sightings at Stonefield, and that’s something we thought we’d never see in our lifetime. These are unusual and exciting times,” adds retired FAA expert Bruce Weinstein who joined the Oregon UFO “watchers” last year.

WikiLeaks UFO files still being review by ufologists and other experts

“We’re not sure at this point how many of the recently released WikiLeaks ‘251,287 cables’ are tied to UFO government secrets,” adds Weinstein. “But it’s clear that whatever Julian Assange has kept under wraps is of interest to a whole lot of people.”

In turn, the controversial Australian is still kept in exile in England where he makes “video calls from his house where he awaits sexual assault charges in Sweden,” reported the Guardian newspaper in London.

At the same time, Assange spoke via video link to fans at a Berlin technology trade show Sept. 6 about a mix-up in passwords to his encrypted WikiLeaks files, the Guardian reported.

It was on Dec. 13 of last year that the European Union newspaper – the EU Times – made world headlines by announcing that “WikiLeaks set to reveal US-UFO War in Southern Ocean.”

In turn, EU Times updated its story on Jan. 12, 2011 stating that “the first WikiLeaks’ cable mentioning UFOs would be released.”
“A new report circulating in the Kremlin today prepared for President Medvedev by Russian Space Forces (VKS) 45th Division of Space Control says that an upcoming WikiLeaks release of secret US cables details that the Americans have been ‘engaged’ since 2004 in a ‘war’ against UFO’s based on or near the Continent of Antarctica, particularly the Southern Ocean,” reported the European Union Times.

“According to this report, the United States went to its highest alert level on June 10, 2004 after a massive fleet of UFO’s ‘suddenly emerged’ from the Southern Ocean and approached Guadalajara, Mexico barely 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) from the American border. Prior to reaching the US border, however, this massive UFO fleet is said in this report to have ‘dimensionally returned’ to their Southern Ocean ‘home base,’” the EU Times stated.

This report, referenced in the EU Times, goes on to state that "after WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange warned last week that he would begin releasing secret US cables relating to these Southern Ocean UFO’s, and the Americans ‘war’ against them. In turn, Assange was immediately arrested by British Police on trumped up charges issued by the Swedish government.”

Leslie Kean’s book “UFOs: Generals, Pilots, and Government Officials go on the Record,” views the French government’s “COMETA” UFO documents as pointing out how “the extraterrestrial hypothesis is the most likely one to explain what we know.”

In brief, COMETA states that UFOs and alien beings are here now on Earth, and have been here for a long, long time. Moreover, there’s real threats from various “extraterrestrials” that are beyond the comprehension of man, and today’s technology.

Moreover, Kean points to a list of top world leaders and scientists – who’ve gone public in their belief of UFOs and alien life – must “accept the logic” and “disavow the untenable claim that we have no evidence other than eyewitness reports.”

“Given that we know we have a physical manifestation of something highly unusual of unknown origin, isn’t it time to acquire the additional evidence needed to find out what it is? If we need extraordinary evidence, then let’s do our job and go get it,” writes Kean of no better time than now for the world governments to come clean on what’s been kept secret about UFOs.

“And so a new slogan is in order: ‘An extraordinary phenomenon demands an extraordinary investigation,’ writes Kean. “The world’s scientists are entirely capable of devising the methodologies and manufacturing the technology needed to solve this extraordinary mystery of UFOs.”
