A witness reports that she and her boyfriend observed red/orange lights over the ocean, east of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on the evening of Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at 9:30 p.m.

Originally submitted to MUFON, this report is as is, with no corrections.

MUFON Case # 41571
Location: Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Date of Sighting: 08/08/2012
Time of Sighting: 09:30 UTC
Distance: Over One Mile
Duration: Undisclosed
Object Flight Path: Hovering then path,Straight-line path,Path with directional change
Object Shape: Fireball, Flash, Sphere
Summary: Hovering orange-red orbs blink then synchronize over the ocean

Report:
While sitting on the beach waiting for the local fireworks show to start (there's one every Wednesday), my boyfriend and I noticed a bright orange/red ball of light directly east, out over the ocean, below cloud level. The first light appeared and disappeared, then another did the same. Several minutes later, similar lights were seen doing the same. A few moments later, approximately 5 of these orbs synchronized and appeared in a slightly curved line and were equidistant from one another. They appeared for 5-10 seconds, then disappeared again, all at the exact same time. One more object appeared and disappeared afterward. The entire event occurred over the course of about 15 minutes. The orbs were roughly the color of a flare, but did not move as such. Instead, they hovered and disappeared quickly, not slowly dying out like a flare would. Several aircraft left Myrtle Beach Airport around the time of the sighting, but when they flew near the orange orbs, they were much higher altitude. No sounds accompanied the sightings.

Update!

I just received an email from a witness who reports having seen the same lights near Myrtle Beach, SC.

"Ive just returned home from a Myrtle Beach vaca. My wife and I had a sighting over the ocean. I was blown away by this. When I got home tday I found your web sight and was even more blown away to see that others reported the sighting. This all occured 8/8/12 around 9-9:15 pm. Ive read the other reports and I can 100% verify the other stories, almost exactly. Im very interested in this kind of stuff so this was exciting to me. My wife on the other hand is more skeptical and a little freaked out by all this! Just wanted to share this with you. Thanks"

  1. My family and I live in the myrtle beach area and there have been numerous reports of sightings of these lights over the ocean this past week. My family and I personally saw these tonight and I swear I have never seen anything like it! There is no explanation that I can even come up with for them.. I just wish I would have had my camera!

  2. My girlfriend and I saw the exact same lights as described in Mufon case 41571. This was on September 10th, 2013. Have not been able to find any notice from local media or otherwise, but we did absolutely see this.

  3. Thank you all for corroborating the initial report. I've no doubt that you saw what you claim. Such reports are on the rise and not all these sightings can be dismissed as flares.

  4. Just saw this exact same thing happen at Myrtle. Absolutely bizarre. Strangely, about 5 minutes after the lights stopped, we saw several planes flying at a very high altitude (barely making out the flashing lights) leaving that area flying in formation. Scrambled to investigate???

  5. We saw these lights tonight around 11:00 from our balcony at our hotel. Looked like the orange balls skipped over each other and then came out of one another. About 5 minutes later one more showed up just south. All only lasting a few seconds. So bizarre. Strangest thing we have ever seen. We also saw 2 planes shortly after flying so you could barely see them, but they were flying together.

  8. Earlier tonight, I saw two, orange lights in the sky that appeared to be over the ocean. They were unlike anything I have ever seen before and were quite odd. I am in Calabash, NC, about 20 miles North of Myrtle Beach.
