My Take On The 1st Annual Tyler, Texas Paranormal Conference

I'm back from the conference in Tyler, Texas and it was awesome!  I met so many nice people and had a wonderful time.  I even think I did OK as a speaker, at least I hope I was able to inform and for some, build an interest in the field of Ufology.

After I spoke Saturday morning and while folks were taking a short 10 minute break, I was able to answer a few questions and even listen to stories of UFO sighting, including a skeptic or two, as they told me of their experiences.   But they are skeptics, right?  

I tried to impress on everyone that UFO means "unidentified flying object."  It doesn't automatically mean that every unidentified object is an alien craft, it simply means what it implies, that it was something you couldn't identify.

At the Para Con, each speaker was entertaining and informative. After all, they are experts in their own fields of interest, be it ghost hunting, Bigfoot hunting, speaking with spirits, energy work or little o' me and UFOs (Me, an expert?  I'm still learning!).  It was a great experience for me, as I am sure it was for everyone who attended.  I am definitely looking forward to next year!

Russian Meteor Unrelated To Asteroid Flyby

No, the Russians did not shoot down a UFO, despite some claims.  Unfortunately for residents of Chelyabinsk, Russia, it was nothing more than a huge rock from space;  a meteor/bolide which it happened to fall to earth only hours before asteroid 2012 DA14 made it's 17,200 mile pass (closer than many satellites)!

At the time of this posting, approximately 1200 people have been injured, in and around Chelyabinsk, mostly by flying glass.  Many people may have been injured after having been knocked off their feet by the blast from the fireball.

According to the trajectory of the Chelyabinsk bolide, it had nothing to do with asteroid 1012 DA14... and it wasn't a UFO. -SW

Press Release: NASA Experts Discuss Russia Meteor in Media Teleconference Today

 

WASHINGTON -- NASA experts will hold a teleconference for news media at 4 p.m. EST today to discuss a meteor that streaked through the skies over Russia's Urals region this morning.

Scientists have determined the Russia meteor is not related to asteroid 2012 DA14 that will safely pass Earth today at a distance of more than 17,000 miles. Early assessments of the Russia meteor indicate it was about one-third the size of 2012 DA14 and traveling in a different direction.

Panelists for the teleconference are:
-- Bill Cooke, lead for the Meteoroid Environments Office at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.
-- Paul Chodas, research scientist in the Near Earth Object Program Office at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

About 1,100 injured as meteorite hits Russia with force of atomic bomb


A meteor streaked across the sky and exploded over Russia's Ural Mountains with the power of an atomic bomb Friday, its sonic blasts shattering countless windows and injuring about 1,100 people.

The spectacle deeply frightened many Russians, with some elderly women declaring that the world was coming to an end. Many of the injured were cut by flying glass as they flocked to windows, curious about what had produced such a blinding flash of light.

The meteor -- estimated to be about 10 tons and 49 feet wide -- entered the Earth's atmosphere at a hypersonic speed of at least 33,000 mph and shattered into pieces about 18-32 miles above the ground, the Russian Academy of Sciences said in a statement. But even small asteroids pack a tremendous punch, explained Andrew Cheng of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.

"It doesn’t take a very large object. A 10-meter size object already packs the same energy as a nuclear bomb," Cheng, who led a 2000-2001 mission for NASA to orbit and land on an asteroid, told FoxNews.com.

Amateur video showed an object speeding across the sky about 9:20 a.m. local time, just after sunrise, leaving a thick white contrail and an intense flash.

"There was panic. People had no idea what was happening," said Sergey Hametov, a resident of Chelyabinsk, a city of 1 million about 930 miles east of Moscow.

"We saw a big burst of light, then went outside to see what it was and we heard a really loud, thundering sound," he told The Associated Press by telephone.

The meteor hit less than a day before Asteroid 2012 DA14 is to make the closest recorded pass of an asteroid to the Earth for a rock of its size -- about 17,150 miles. But the European Space Agency said its experts had determined there was no connection -- just cosmic coincidence.

The meteor released several kilotons of energy above the region, the Russian science academy said. According to NASA, it was about 15 meters or 49 feet wide before it hit the atmosphere, about one-third the size of the passing asteroid.

Some meteorite fragments fell in a reservoir outside the town of Chebarkul. The crash left a 26-foot-wide crater in the ice.

The shock wave blew in more than 1 million square feet of glass, according to city officials, who said 3,000 buildings in the city were damaged. At one zinc factory, part of the roof collapsed.

The Interior Ministry said about 1,100 people sought medical care after the shock wave and 48 of them were hospitalized. Most of the injuries were caused by flying glass, officials said.

There was no immediate word on any deaths or anyone struck by space fragments.

Russia Meteor Not Linked to Asteroid Flyby

NASA statement on Russia meteor:
"According to NASA scientists, the trajectory of the Russia meteor was significantly different than the trajectory of the asteroid 2012 DA14, making it a completely unrelated object. Information is still being collected about the Russia meteor and analysis is preliminary at this point. In videos of the meteor, it is seen to pass from left to right in front of the rising sun, which means it was traveling from north to south. Asteroid DA14's trajectory is in the opposite direction, from south to north."

New information provided by a worldwide network of sensors has allowed scientists to refine their estimates for the size of the object that entered that atmosphere and disintegrated in the skies over Chelyabinsk, Russia, at 7:20:26 p.m. PST, or 10:20:26 p.m. EST on Feb. 14 (3:20:26 UTC on Feb. 15).

The estimated size of the object, prior to entering Earth's atmosphere, has been revised upward from 49 feet (15 meters) to 55 feet (17 meters), and its estimated mass has increased from 7,000 to 10,000 tons. Also, the estimate for energy released during the event has increased by 30 kilotons to nearly 500 kilotons of energy released. These new estimates were generated using new data that had been collected by five additional infrasound stations located around the world – the first recording of the event being in Alaska, over 6,500 kilometers away from Chelyabinsk. The infrasound data indicates that the event, from atmospheric entry to the meteor's airborne disintegration took 32.5 seconds. The calculations using the infrasound data were performed by Peter Brown at the University of Western Ontario, Canada.

"We would expect an event of this magnitude to occur once every 100 years on average," said Paul Chodas of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "When you have a fireball of this size we would expect a large number of meteorites to reach the surface and in this case there were probably some large ones."

The trajectory of the Russia meteor was significantly different than the trajectory of the asteroid 2012 DA14, which hours later made its flyby of Earth, making it a completely unrelated object. The Russia meteor is the largest reported since 1908, when a meteor hit Tunguska, Siberia.

The Russia meteor is the largest reported since 1908, when a meteor hit Tunguska, Siberia. The meteor entered the atmosphere at about 40,000 mph (18 kilometers per second). The impact time was 7:20:26 p.m. PST, or 10:20:26 p.m. EST on Feb. 14 (3:20:26 UTC on Feb. 15), and the energy released by the impact was in the hundreds of kilotons.

Based on the duration of the event, it was a very shallow entry. It was larger than the meteor over Indonesia on Oct. 8, 2009. Measurements are still coming in, and a more precise measure of the energy may be available later. The size of the object before hitting the atmosphere was about 49 feet (15 meters) and had a mass of about 7,000 tons.

The meteor, which was about one-third the diameter of asteroid 2012 DA14, was brighter than the sun. Its trail was visible for about 30 seconds, so it was a grazing impact through the atmosphere.

It is important to note that this estimate is preliminary, and may be revised as more data is obtained.

The Martian rover Curiosity has discovered a shiny piece of dark metal,  found protruding from a rocky area on the red planet's surface.   The photo certainly peaked 'my curiosity', so I decided to enlarge and enhance the object in the image provided by NASA.

If you will notice in the full image, there appears to be tire marks, one of which shows up very well.  At first glance, I had figured out what that shiny piece of metal is!  Any biker can tell by the clues in the photo, that it's a part that fell off of a Harley Davidson motorcycle!  A foot-peg.

Seriously, what has NASA spent billions, perhaps trillions of dollars on Mars missions, if they don't plan to investigate something like a piece of metal found in a rock-strewn Martian landscape?   "Oh yeah, a piece of metal.   Whoopee.   Probably just a chunk of meteor, or metal ore that happens to look like a door handle.   Rocks are so much more interesting."   Not!

Just where is the curiosity in the Curiosity science team?   Hold on, it's coming to me... "ignore the obvious."   It's an unusual piece of flotsam in a sea of dirt and rock, nothing more.   Gotcha!   Carry on.

Curiosity rover discovers strange piece of metal on Mars

Slashgear.com- The Curiosity rover on Mars has been keeping itself quite busy lately, most recently boring into Mars’ red surface in order to find signs of life. However, in its downtime, the rover likes to take a lot of photos, including self-portraits, but this time around, Curiosity came across a strange chunk of metal sticking out of the ground? What could it be?

The photo was snapped on January 30 using one of the rover’s MastCam cameras to get shots of the landscape, and it ended up getting this odd piece of metal in the frame. NASA’s scientists aren’t 100% sure what it is, but they think it may be a chunk from a meteorite, or possibly a chunk of ore that became exposed by some sort of erosion.

It’s said that the object is only a half-centimeter tall, so it’s extremely tiny compared to how big it looks in the image. NASA hasn’t said whether or not it will check out the piece of metal, or if they’ll just ignore it and continue on with their planned experiments. After all, they do have more holes to drill.

However, while some think it’s simply a tiny piece of metal, Elisabetta Bonora of Alive Universe Images, mentions that the hunk of metal takes up about 35 pixels in the image. Taking into account the camera’s resolution and the distance between the rover and the object, the size of the chunk of metal may actually be larger than just 0.5 cm — it’s possible that it’s up to a foot tall. At this point, we’ll never know, unless NASA decides to investigate, but it’s very possible they just might let it be and continue on as scheduled.

Flying Cryptids: Witness Sees "Strange Flying Bird" Over Birmingham, Alabama

I received an email from a witness in Birmingham, Alabama, who had a strange encounter with an unknown flying creature, while out walking his dogs.

December 27, 2012 (evening)

I feel silly writing to you,but what I saw tonight has me a little shaken. Tonight, while walking our two dogs, I looked up at the moon and saw a giant bat like bird. I say bat like because of its pointed wings. It was huge! My initial thoughts were that no bird could possibly be that large and that high up in the sky. If I had not been staring up at the moon I probably would have missed it completely. The color appeared black or brown. It was dark in color. Easily missed in the dark sky.

This has freaked me out so badly that I've been googling all sorts of stuff that it could have been:(

The next evening he wrote:

It was larger than a man. It was more like the size of a small plane. It was huge! I couldn't tell if it had a head or tail. What I noticed was the wings looked like bat wings. Almost pointed like and webbed. I would have missed it if it had not soared by the moon. It was very fast.

I looked and looked tonight I have to admit I did walk the dogs a little faster than usual. I'm still a little spooked.

Please note that the witness did not give me the exact time, so I am not sure if it was before midnight on the 27th, or after midnight on the 28th, that this sighting occurred.   One thing is certain,  whatever this was it has the witness on edge.

There have been a number of sightings of Pterosaurs / Pterodactyls, also known as a Ropen.  These sightings range all around the North American continent, from Canada to Texas.  They also been seen in Hawaii, Papua New Guinea and Cuba.

What is it that people are witnessing?  Did these creatures survive the extinction of the dinosaurs and later, the Ice Age?  Or could they be extra-dimensional, coming into our reality from another time, another world?

From Pterodactyls; flying Manta Rays; Jellyfish; Thunderbirds and flying humanoids, to Moth Men; people are seeing not only unidentified craft but also flying creatures. 
I've seen some strange things myself, so I certainly can't laugh this off as vivid imaginations.  So, what are these creatures?  Maybe someday we will know for sure.  For now, we can only speculate.

Bat-winged creature seen by family in Washington State

I received an email from a witness in Washington State, who claims to have seen some type of flying creatures that made a meal of their cats. 

Now normally I would suspect the usual culprits, eagles, owls, etc., but the witness claims these creatures have no feathers, that their wings are bat-like and leathery, with claws on the upper area of the wings, allowing them to cling to trees.


In the first email, the witness reported:
We live in the Pacific Northwest on many acres of mostly tree covered land with a creek.  We have seen and heard a strange nocturnal, bat-like creature.  This thing is huge, light grey, skin with no fur, feathers or scales.  It silently swoops down at you with giant bat wings.  It makes a sound like a jungle monkey or bird, thus we refer to it as the monkey bird. 

We keep our chickens and goats, small dogs and cats safely housed at night, however two of our cats who sneaked out one night onto the roof disappeared without a trace of fur, blood or any evidence of what exactly happened.  They wouldn't run away, and our outdoor watch dogs don't allow any coyotes or ground traveling predators anywhere near us. 

There were two of them together and they seemed fearless of me when they swooped down at me more than once and returned way up to the top of the highest trees.  I couldn't get a look at the faces or eyes, mainly the huge grey bat-wings approximately 4' span .are what I could see.  They seem to show up every summer always after dusk anytime through the night.  Locals don't seem to know about them.  I might ask the local Native American Indian tribes to see if they know anything about these creatures. 
Do you know of anyone else who might know what these things are?   My brother and I saw another weird bat-like creature two summers ago that was also quite bizarre yet not like these huge ones.  We were riding our bikes at dusk and this black guinea pig sized thing with bat wings with holes all through the wings ran across the dirt road in front of us and under a bush.  We don't know anyone who has seen anything like that either, but we DID see it. 

We see regular little, common bats all of the time after dusk so we know what they are like.  We know owls, hawks, eagles and all of the normal flying creatures around here and these others are definitely out of the ordinary.

After talking with Lon Strickler of Phantoms & Monsters, who suggested it could be a Eurasian Eagle Owl, I pressed the witness for more information and told the witness that it could be as Lon suggested.

Thank you for checking with your colleague.  Are the owl wings shaped like bat wings?  Do they cling to the sides of the trees?  Do they make a sound like "Hooooowhahhhhhh, aaahooooowahhhh!  with the wah like the rolling of your tongue?   Also the skin on the chest and wings was grey, mottled with some brownish color like a Mexican hairless dogs skin, and it had like visible blood veins kind of like protruding on the skin area. 

Where can we find a picture of the Asian eagle owl and find out what it sounds like?  These might be moulting or sick or something.  We would love to solve the mystery, and know more about them.  Please let us know if you find anymore info.  Thank you again.

I also said: We have to rule out the plausible explanations.  If it isn't an owl, then what we have is an "unknown".  If you can get any locals to talk about it, they may give you some clues.  I will do some research but I need to know at least your general location.  The Pacific Northwest is a large area.  I lived a year in Tacoma (Ft. Lewis) but never even saw an owl.  Meanwhile, if you find out anything or can get a photo of these things, please let me know!

Thanks again for your help and research.  It is truly appreciated.  We are [location removed by SW/LITS] in a large forested area with a huge creek running all through it. 

We looked through and listened to all of the owl/eagle info and enjoyed it very much.  I can say with certainty that these things were definitely not owls, eagles, vultures or anything like them.  I guess no one would believe us unless they saw them and heard them.  These are real. 

They have huge bat wings with the claw type thing on the top of the wing that helps them clutch the tree.  It is true that they don't seem to flap like a regular bat would.  They quietly swoop and glide.  They sound like those african jungle monkeys and you can see skin, no feathers, scales etc. 

I'm sure these have got to be categorized as unknown.  Maybe someone has been doing some weird genetic experiments with wildlife and releasing them to see what the survival rate will be.  Maybe an environmental mutation. 

We will try to ask others who spend time after dusk in the forests, (if we can find anyone like that these days) whether or not they have seen or heard anything like this.  We will let you know right away if we learn anymore about this.

Report:
Here is what happened, normally I am not home during on weekdays during working hours, however my childcare (nanny) was sick and I didn’t have a back-up. Anyway, we went to the boardwalk so I can run a few miles and my daughter loves being pushed in her running stroller… sorry Anyhoo, I was deciding which way I would run first, I enter the Staten Island Boardwalk on Seaview Avenue and Father Capodanno. I turned toward the east and all of a sudden from nothing to a flying object that looked like a STINGRAY it moved like a stingray, it was the same color as a stingray. To me, it appeared to have like a light green and pale pink energy around it and it also appeared DISTRESSED…. It was barely moving and I watched it until it vanished…. It didn’t fly away fast it just became invisible, or I want to say transparent with the clouds. As I mentioned it appeared distressed, and I am not the only one who thought that because the police helicopters were searching, several helicopters for a very long time… I thought I saw it again over the Verrazano bridge, but again in a second it was transparent again. I could see the energy around this thing and it was amazing… Also, as you will be able to see in the photo, there was NO plane pulling it!!!!

T'is the Season!

Well, another year is about gone and 2012 has really been a doozie.  It turned out to be the Apocalypse that wasn't.  Good thing!

UFO sightings have increased worldwide, during the past few months and it's been exciting.  Makes me wonder what 2013 will bring.

Throughout the coming New Year, I will continue to investigate the UFO/alien phenomena and keep everyone up-to-date on the latest sightings.  Please remember to include as much detail as possible, in your reports.  As always, witnesses remain anonymous.

The End of the World is Nigh! No It Isn't!

Survival gear and bunker sales are through the roof and so have been the doomsday predictions.

If you manufacture or sale freeze-dried foods and water purifiers, or build underground Armageddon shelters, you must be rolling in the dough.   If the world was going to end for real, what were you planning on doing with all that money?    Never mind, toilet paper will be in short supply.

Yesterday (Dec. 19, 2012), when our solar system lined up with the center of our galaxy, you didn't even feel it, did you?   And where is Planet X (Nibiru)?   It should be filling our skies and blotting out the sun but it isn't.

The Mesoamerican "long count" and Mayan calendars never mention a world shattering disaster.   Do our own calendars predict a worlds end?   Only on April 15th (tax day).   If anything,  celebrate the fact that we will all still be here to open our presents on the 25th.

It's smart to prepare for natural disasters, I should know.   I live in what is called Tornado Alley.   I owned a home in Wichita Falls, Texas, back in April, 1979.   When the tornado hit, it ripped my home from it's foundation and splinted it into a million pieces.   Looking around on that day, at the miles of devastation, one could well imagine what the end of the world might look like.

Hey, if you were hoping for an end to Momma Earth, better luck next time.   Yeah, there will be the next doomsday and the next, etc., and those who profit from doomsday fears will again be laughing all the way to the bank.

Worried About the End of the World on Dec. 21? Don’t Be.

If you frequent online bulletin boards, fear-mongering websites, or the History Channel, you might think otherwise: It’s hard to avoid people screaming about the prophetic Maya calendar predicting global catastrophe.

And if you haven’t heard of it, then I wish I were you. Because I get email, tweets, Facebook messages, and probably smoke signals about it all the time, and have been for years. It turns out that a lot of people are concerned about these claims, despite zero evidence for them. Still, it’s worth taking a look at them, if only to assuage some fears.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, making my own prediction concerning December 21, 2012.

I have to agree with David Morrison of NASA,  that there is no planet about to collide with Earth.  Albeit, there are such things are rogue planets but if one was barreling down on us from space, we would have seen it coming months ago.  And no, it isn't hiding at the South Pole!

Planet alignment is an astronomical novelty but it does not herald the end of the world, nor does the Earth's alignment with the center of our galaxy.   In the 4 billion or so years that Earth has been spinning around the sun, it's tilted, wobbled, the magnetic field has changed, the sun has belched solar flares and gee, the Earth is still here.

Disasters happen.  The earth is an active, live planet,  subject to all manners of internal as well as external forces, such as lunar and solar activity.  Most people no longer live in caves and have this new device called a laptop, iPad or smart phone, so word does get around a lot faster than it used to (i.e., Pony Express).

An alien invasion isn't imminent;  the only lifeforms we really need to fear are ourselves and our own selfish needs. I can almost here the aliens "out there", discussing the chaos on Earth. "Can you believe this crap?  They have a good thing and all they want to do is screw it up!"

Even the Mayans themselves reject any notion of the world's end on 12/21/2012.  At a ceremony in Cuba, Mayan sage Pedro Celestino Yac Noj burned seeds and fruits to mark the end of the old calender. He is quoted as saying, "The 21st is for giving thanks and gratitude and the 22nd welcomes the new cycle, a new dawn."

My prediction is that you will wake up to a new day on December 22nd, realizing that you only have 2 days left to buy Christmas presents and taxes will still be due on April 15, 2013.   You've spent your life savings on a 3 bedroom luxury bunker and a 50,000 gallon water tank, buried somewhere in Nevada.   Good luck finding it in 5 feet of snow!

You will also realize that you now have to deal with a 10 year supply of toilet paper; several cases of batteries, MREs (meals ready to eat),  beans, rice, powdered milk and enough ammo to start and finish a small war.  Don't worry, there is always another doomsday prediction waiting on the horizon.  You are in luck!  Some of that freeze dried food has a shelf life of 25 years!

Voyager 1 Enters Magnetic Highway, AKA the Last Step to Interstellar Space

NASA scientists say Voyager 1 could enter interstellar space anywhere from months to a couple of years from now

NASA's Voyager 1 is traveling through the last leg of its journey before entering interstellar space.

Voyager 1, which was launched into space in 1977 to eventually explore interstellar space and become the most distant human-made object, has reached a region that NASA scientists are calling a magnetic highway. This highway consists of charged particles where the sun's magnetic field lines are connected to interstellar magnetic field lines.

This area is still considered part of our heliosphere, which is a bubble of charged particles around the sun, because the direction of the magnetic field lines has not changed. The direction of these lines will change when Voyager 1 enters interstellar space, and scientists believe the magnetic highway is the last stretch before finally making it to interstellar space.

"Although Voyager 1 still is inside the sun's environment, we now can taste what it's like on the outside because the particles are zipping in and out on this magnetic highway," said Edward Stone, Voyager project scientist based at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena. "We believe this is the last leg of our journey to interstellar space. Our best guess is it's likely just a few months to a couple years away. The new region isn't what we expected, but we've come to expect the unexpected from Voyager."

What will our little 'messenger of peace' find out there,  in the vastness of space between star systems?   For good or ill,  Voyager treks on in search of other worlds,  other solar systems.  

What might it find?

I am reminded of  "Star Trek - The Movie",  where a massive ship approaches Earth,  seeking it's creator.  If it doesn't find "the creator",  "V'ger" will destroy planet Earth.
 
The crew of the Enterprise finally deduce that V'ger is actually "Voyager 6".   While in deep interstellar space,  Voyager 6 is found by a superior race of (probably) cybernetic aliens,  who repair the tiny craft,  place it at the core of a massive ship,  pat it's little metal bottom and send it home to daddy.   The mission:  Join with the creator, or destroy.  

Oh my!

Lucky for us,  there never was a Voyager 6.   NASA only sent two Voyagers into space.

The thought still remains.   Let's just hope we never have to live out that scenario with V-1, or V-2.   The real Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock might not be so clever,  as in the movies.

COULD A SOLAR FLARE BE THE END OF US?

Last night I watched "THE KILLSHOT: APPROACHING THE MOMENT", on DVD.  According to Major Ed Dames (ret.), remote viewers have seen a doomsday scenario, in which the Earth will be devastated by a tremendous solar flare.   It isn't that far fetched, as signs keep pointing to that most real possibility.

On Tuesday, August 6, 2011, an x6.9 flare was recorded. Then on Monday, October 22, 2012, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) captured the sun erupting with an X1.8 class solar flare. The solar flare came from an active region on the left side of the sun known as AR 1598. This area of the sun has been known as a source of weaker flares.

So the October 22, 2012 flare was weaker than the one on August 6, 2011. Does that mean the sun's flare activity is winding down? No, NASA predictes 2013 (May) will see solar storms building towards a peak, though at the same time, they claim that killer solar storms are an impossibility. Gee, that still doesn't sound very reassuring.

So just what are solar flares?  Flares occur when powerful magnetic fields in and around the sun reconnect. Often associated with active regions on the sun's surface, where the magnetic fields are strongest and seen as sun spots. Classified according to their strength, the smallest flares are B-class, followed by C, M and X, which is the largest.  Each letter represents a ten-fold increase in energy output.   Therefore, an X is 10 times an M and 100 times a C.

There is also another scale within each letter class, these range from 1 to 9.  C-class flares have little noticeable affect on Earth but M-class flares can cause brief radio blackouts at the North and South poles and produce minor radiation storms which could endanger astronauts. X is the last letter and most powerful class, however, there are flares 10 times more powerful than an X1 and X-class flares can go higher than 9.

In 2003, a very powerful flare was recorded (during the last solar maximum).  That particularly powerful flare overloaded the sensors that were measuring it (the sensors cut-out at X28).  A powerful X-class flare such as that can create long lasting radiation storms, harm satellites, create global transmission problems, cause world-wide blackouts and even airline passengers flying near the poles, could receive small doses of radiation.

On the cloudless British morning of Thursday, September 1, 1859, solar astronomer Richard Carrington took note of and drew a representation, of the sunspots he saw through the projected image from his 11 inch wide telescope.  Before dawn the next day, skies all over the Earth erupted in red, purple and green auroras, which were so brilliant, that newspapers could be read as if it were daylight. Auroras could even be seen as far south as Cuba, Jamaica, the Bahamas, El Salvador and even in Hawaii.

That wasn't the end of the story for the "Carrington Flare." Telegraph systems worldwide, went haywire. Sparks discharged, shocking telegraph operators, even setting fire to telegraph paper.  Not only that, when telegraphers disconnected the batteries powering the telegraph lines, the aurora-induced electric currents in the wires still allowed messages to be transmitted, though many messages were gibberish.

So what would happen if a flare like the 1859 flare occurred?  Or how about that mega-flare that Major Ed Dames' remote viewers have seen in our near future? Power grids all over the world would go down and all electronic communications would cease.  Satellites would be fried. The International Space Station would be no protection for the astronauts and airplanes could conceivably fall from the sky. There would be no phones, no TV, no Internet and no microwave ovens.  And if you were out in it, you'd probably have a really nasty sunburn and a huge dose of radiation. Bummer!

Society would most likely be knocked back to (at least temporarily), that day in 1859, minus the telegraph. Such circumstances could last anywhere from a few months, to years! That wouldn't be so bad now, would it?  Well, maybe so.  I've finally gotten used to "texting".

Lens flare goes viral thanks to ABC

Last Friday, ABC’s Good Morning America decided to do a Great Taboo story on the cheap. It aired a piece by east Texas affiliate KLTV about an alleged UFO captured by Google Earth cameras in tiny Jacksonville, Tex. It was a whimsical little jellybean that cost nothing to produce. The accompanying ABC blog post indicated another similar UFO had been located on Google Earth in New Mexico.

ABC's Good Morning America made a whoop-de-doo about this lens flare, which led to a worldwide blogosphere phenomenon/CREDIT: Google Earth and Devoid

The dual-UFO story went viral, from The Daily Mail in London to The Pakistan Daily Times. Although critics tendered lens flare as a possible explanation, one “UFO expert” declared “Without question, this is a legitimate craft. It is not a reflection or anything like that. That’s nonsense. I’m actually quite surprised that this is not getting more media attention.”

Actually, it’s hard to imagine how the thing got this far. Within minutes of being shown the Google images, our Herald-Tribune photo chief Mike Lang noodled around the Google Street View imagery and found yet another lens flare “UFO” in Texas — only, it was on the ground, not in the air.

Oh, please.  It's claptrap like this that hurts real UFO research.  I said it before in another post and I will say it again.  It is a lens flare.  You can find examples all over Google Maps Street Views. 

Lens flare is caused by "non-image light" which does not pass (refract) directly along its intended path.  Instead, this light reflects internally on lens elements multiple times, before finally reaching the film, or digital sensor.

Flare-inducing light sources include the sun, artificial lighting and even a full moon, or other brightly lit surfaces.

Lens flares can take on different shapes, depending on the camera lens and aperture settings.  The best way to avoid lens flares, are to use filters, lens hoods, or simply don't take photos with the camera pointed towards a bright light source.

What he is best known for, is his contributions to the modern alternating current (AC) electrical supply system we used today.  Tesla also demonstrated "wireless" energy transfer to power electronic devices, had patents in wireless communication and radio, including many revolutionary developments in the field of electromagnetism.

Now here it is 2012 and an innovative young man by the the name of Matthew Inman of the Oatmeal.com, steps up and begins a campaign to raise money, in order to buy the site of Tesla's Wardenclyffe laboratory, located in Shoreham, New York.

In just one week the $850,000 goal was greatly exceeded but the campaign isn't over, not by a long shot.

Tesla died on January 7, 1943, destitute and alone.  All his great achievements were overshadowed and basically all but forgotten.  A museum is the least we can do, to give back to a man we owe so much to.

A NASA-funded physicist at the University of Iowa has figured out how to pinpoint so-called X-points, or places where the magnetic field of Earth connects to the magnetic field of the sun.

According to NASA, a researcher at the University of Iowa says portals, long a favorite of science fiction, actually are real.

Jack Scudder, a plasma physicist who made the portal discovery, explains:
"We call them X-points or electron diffusion regions. They're places where the magnetic field of Earth connects to the magnetic field of the Sun, creating an uninterrupted path leading from our own planet to the sun's atmosphere 93 million miles away."

Using observations from NASA's THEMIS space weather satellites and Europe's Cluster operations, Scudder concluded that these magnetic portals, located tens of thousands of kilometers from Earth, open and close at intervals. They provide a through-way for energy from the Sun to cause geomagnetic storms, heat the upper-atmosphere, and even cause dramatic light shows known as auroras.

Report:
On the 4th of July, we went to see the fireworks at Fair Park in Dallas. We parked in a church parking lot at the corner of Gurley Ave and Carroll. Many other people were parked here as well. I noticed two red/orange slow-moving orbs, or what I first thought were fireworks. I was thinking, "Why aren't they racing upward to explode like they usually do?" I asked my cousin, "What ARE those!?" We thought they looked like Chinese lanterns on fire. Then we noticed they weren't going up, they were moving sideways, and I thought it was weird that they seemed to be "caught in the wind" and moving away from where the fireworks would be. I'm not good with direction, but we were facing Fair Park from the parking lot, and these orbs were moving past us, in the direction behind us. They were not moving quickly. They never seemed to stop moving but taking their very sweet time, maybe going about 20-30 mph. Everyone was staring at them, trying to figure out what they were. They were reminiscent of tail lights on a car, but far apart from each other. They were also hovering rather low, which is the other reason I discerned they weren't fireworks. Low, slow moving, and non-exploding. And then I got impatient waiting for the fireworks and forgot all about them. Until the next day. My brother in law arrived at my house to pick up his kids and he sat down and said, "I SAW something last night." The kids were around so he was hesitant to go into detail at first but I instantly knew what he was talking about. I told him to tell me what he saw, and he described EXACTLY what my cousin and I saw, and he lives at LEAST 30 minutes away from where we saw them. And it was at the exact same time.

For fourth of July, we went to Fair Park in Dallas to see the fireworks. While getting ready before they began the show, we noticed two red lights a little off in the distance. I made a passing joke about UFO's, until we noticed they were progressively getting closer, proving they weren't fireworks because they were moving sideways and didn't explode. They were moving between 20-40 mph and were not that far above us. At one point they were directly above us. I looked away for a moment, and when I looked back they were completely vanished. I was able to take two photos on my cell phone that make them appear a little farther than they were, but they look exactly like so many other descriptions I have read from sighting all across the country.

My sister-in-law, brother and myself were lighting fireworks in their back yard.She got our attention about a light in the south east. My brother commented wouldn't that be wild if that was a Ufo. I live behind their home and I was able to grab my binoculars and focus in on it. My binocts are 10x50 and there were not any green and red required Faa lights to be seen by naked eye or by my binocts. This Orb traveled from the South East towards the North West. It seemed to have a slight right turn and made no noise. This Orb had a solid orange-yellow glow. I wasn't sure what it was, but I can tell what it wasn't. I've seen the Military C-130s to F18s,F22s, cargo copters to light prop planes going to or from Dallas / Loves field This Orb traveled faster than a plane, but slower than fighter jets inbound or outbound from airport. This all happened in just seconds. taking a guess this was over in 11 sec or a bit more before it went behind our tree. To describe my feelings and mind set, I was energized This whole event Started 10:06or :07 and was over about 12secs later. +++++++++++------------

Summary: around 1:30pm i noticed a cloud forming then a silver object emerged. I grabbed binoculars and notice that it was saucer shaped. then it disapeared in the cloud and the cloud vanished along with the object.

Report:
around 1:30pm I was sitting in the back yard starring up in the sky when i noticed a cloud forming. After it formed a silver object appeared. I watched while this object started to move away from the cloud and start to move back and forth and then it hovered. I realized this was not an airplane so i went and grabbed my binoculars and zoomed in on it. The object was saucer shaped and the sun was gleaming off it. after awhile the object moved back in the cloud and the cloud vanished along with the object. I tried to get the sighting recorded but was unable to see the object. I have had many sightings over my life time and have learned to take notes.I was a witness to the '97 phoenix sighting while a truck driver. That object passed over me and i swear it was at least a mile wide. The object i saw today could only be seen with sunglasses.

The Days After- A Survival Guide

I have received emails from folks asking what to do if a disaster strikes; most were concerned with "end of the world" scenarios.  Well, if it's the end of the world, will anyone survive?  If you do, you'll need a few skills, or at least a survivalist mindset.  So I have decided to address this topic and make a few suggestions.

If you are like me and can't afford a defunct missile silo, or a remolded bunker as your posh holocaust getaway, then you might want to consider alternatives, such as the nearest root cellar and/or living by your wits.

I'm not saying that the world as we know it is going to end but disasters do happen.  I am not going to hold my breath and wait for some 'alien craft' to snatch me up, then whisk me and my family to safety.  No, surviving is going to be up to me.

So what do you do in case of a major calamity?  Well first off, you need to be prepared and it helps if you know how to live off the land.  If that isn't an option, then aside from a plethora of weaponry and a stockpile of ammunition, you are going to need fresh drinking water... and plenty of it.  Figure at least 1 gallon of water, per person, per day. That's for drinking, not bathing.  Yeah, your gonna get ripe after the first month, so let's hope this disaster doesn't last very long.

You can strain and boil water for drinking, or disinfect water.  If you have water purifying tablets*, that is fine, if you can't light a fire. You will also need containers for your water.  Clean one gallon milk jugs will do fine, just so long as you don't throw away the caps!  Screw on tops are even better.  If you thought ahead, maybe you have already purchased one gallon jugs of water, in bulk.

OK, so you have your drinking water, what's next?  Food.  MREs (meals ready to eat) are darned expensive but there are frugal alternatives.  Canned goods right off the store shelves do have a shelf life but they can last from 2 to 5 years, so stock up.  Hey, you can rotate them out and consume as needed now but replace with a fresh stock.  Figure on at least 2-3 cans per person, per day. And please, don't forget the can opener.  You know, one of those that requires no electricity. 

Food stuffs that come in cans and sealed jars:
Milk
Meat
Vegetables (assorted, such as beans, corn, peas, asparagus, etc.)
Fruits (assorted, such as peaches, pears, cherries, etc.)
Peanut butter
Jellies
The list goes on...

Flour, cornmeal, rice and sugar stores well (kept dry) and so do some dried beans, pasta and potato flakes, though after a while, pinto beans get a bit hard.  I suggest you have plenty of glass containers that seal tight.  You don't want weevils, etc., unless you need the added protein.

Speaking of protein, dried meats such as jerky will be a big plus.  So are peanuts, cashews and other assorted nuts. Make sure everything is stored in stout, sealed containers.  You can also buy powdered eggs in a can.  Check the expiration dates!

Okay now, your tummy is full, so don't forget the toilet paper!

Now where were we... Oh yes.  Survival isn't just eating and enough water to sustain you, or TP to... well, you know.

To survive properly, you need clothing that is going to be of some protection.  We aren't Bigfoots, so we need proper attire.  Post apocalyptic wear calls for comfortable yet sturdy boots, tough pants such as jeans (not cut-offs) and long sleeved shirts. Oh, and don't forget a hat. You also might want to have some sturdy work gloves too.  When chopping wood for a fire, you don't want blisters on your hands.

Why do you need a weapon after a major disaster?  Aside from protection from pedators (including the two-legged kind), you might want to go hunting for fresh meat.

If it is winter, you are going to need blankets, parkas, and anything else that can keep you warm and protect you from hypothermia.

OK, so now we are properly attired, we also tools.  Here's a list of necessities:

First aid kit (stocked well: see link below)
Spoon & fork
can opener
flashlight
lantern
matches/lighters
Cooking pans
Canteen
Camp stove (or learn to build a campfire: See link below)
Hatchet (axe)
Machete (also a weapon against zombies)
Guns and ammo (lots and lots)
Knives (assorted)
Screw driver, wrench, sockets, etc. (in case you need to repair your transportation, or the generator you bought in case the electricity goes out.)

Other essentials:
Rope
String
Hammer & nails
Saw
tarp
Shovel (for the latrine, etc.)

Um, if you have to be mobile, you will probably need a way to haul all this stuff, so you will need an vehicle, or at least a small wagon. 

Unless you own stock in Exxon, I suggest you store up as much petrol (gasoline) as possible but not in your house!  You also need batteries for the flashlight and lantern (unless it is a kerosene lamp, then you need... kerosene!)

If your house is destroyed and you can't get your neighbor to allow you to bunk with him in his cozy cave, then I suggest you pack a tent, or learn to make a teepee out of branches (the axe comes in handy here), vines and moss.  If you are in the dessert, cactus may make a good fence but it's lousy building material.

Two, three or more heads are better than one and that equates to a lot more hands also, so if you have obliging neighbors, or find other survivors you can get along with, then there is more safety in numbers; more guns too!

If there is radiation, well, sorry.  Unless you have one and can wear a radiation suit, 24/7, then just do the best you can, as long as you can.

If you have medical issues and take medications, see if you can stock up, at least a 3 month supply. 

Remember, you need food, water, shelter and protection!
OK, so we can't all be Bert Gummer but we can make do with what we have, even if it is just a sharp knife and a will to live.
