The Mars Rovers have captured photos of some strange things on Mars but is this really what it looks like?   A rodent on Mars?

Others are calling it a rat (must be the long tail),  and my significant other said it looks like a rabbit (with a long tail).  Well it looks sort of 'squirrel-y' to me. 

The object does appear to be a critter of some sort, with a blunt nose, beady eyes and again, a long tail.

The Martian rover Curiosity has discovered a shiny piece of dark metal,  found protruding from a rocky area on the red planet's surface.   The photo certainly peaked 'my curiosity', so I decided to enlarge and enhance the object in the image provided by NASA.

If you will notice in the full image, there appears to be tire marks, one of which shows up very well.  At first glance, I had figured out what that shiny piece of metal is!  Any biker can tell by the clues in the photo, that it's a part that fell off of a Harley Davidson motorcycle!  A foot-peg.

Seriously, what has NASA spent billions, perhaps trillions of dollars on Mars missions, if they don't plan to investigate something like a piece of metal found in a rock-strewn Martian landscape?   "Oh yeah, a piece of metal.   Whoopee.   Probably just a chunk of meteor, or metal ore that happens to look like a door handle.   Rocks are so much more interesting."   Not!

Just where is the curiosity in the Curiosity science team?   Hold on, it's coming to me... "ignore the obvious."   It's an unusual piece of flotsam in a sea of dirt and rock, nothing more.   Gotcha!   Carry on.

Curiosity rover discovers strange piece of metal on Mars

Slashgear.com- The Curiosity rover on Mars has been keeping itself quite busy lately, most recently boring into Mars’ red surface in order to find signs of life. However, in its downtime, the rover likes to take a lot of photos, including self-portraits, but this time around, Curiosity came across a strange chunk of metal sticking out of the ground? What could it be?

The photo was snapped on January 30 using one of the rover’s MastCam cameras to get shots of the landscape, and it ended up getting this odd piece of metal in the frame. NASA’s scientists aren’t 100% sure what it is, but they think it may be a chunk from a meteorite, or possibly a chunk of ore that became exposed by some sort of erosion.

It’s said that the object is only a half-centimeter tall, so it’s extremely tiny compared to how big it looks in the image. NASA hasn’t said whether or not it will check out the piece of metal, or if they’ll just ignore it and continue on with their planned experiments. After all, they do have more holes to drill.

However, while some think it’s simply a tiny piece of metal, Elisabetta Bonora of Alive Universe Images, mentions that the hunk of metal takes up about 35 pixels in the image. Taking into account the camera’s resolution and the distance between the rover and the object, the size of the chunk of metal may actually be larger than just 0.5 cm — it’s possible that it’s up to a foot tall. At this point, we’ll never know, unless NASA decides to investigate, but it’s very possible they just might let it be and continue on as scheduled.

Strange Mystery Spheres on Mars Baffle Scientists

Space.com- A strange picture of odd, spherical rock formations on Mars from NASA's Opportunity rover has scientists scratching their heads over what exactly they're looking at.

The new Mars photo by Opportunity shows a close-up of a rock outcrop called Kirkwood covered in blister-like bumps that mission scientists can't yet explain. At first blush, the formations appear similar to so-called Martian "blueberries" — iron-rich spherical formations first seen by Opportunity in 2004 — but they actually differ in several key ways, scientist said.

"This is one of the most extraordinary pictures from the whole mission," said rover mission principal investigator Steve Squyres of Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., in a statement. "Kirkwood is chock full of a dense accumulation of these small spherical objects. Of course, we immediately thought of the blueberries, but this is something different. We never have seen such a dense accumulation of spherules in a rock outcrop on Mars."

At first blush, using a rocket-powered flying crane to lower a $2.5 billion nuclear-powered rover to the surface of Mars seems risky at best. But engineers say it solves a host of daunting challenges.

CNET News- The question is straightforward: how to get a car-size rover safely to the surface of Mars? And not just anywhere, but to a very precisely defined bull-s-eye on the floor of a broad crater, within roving distance of a 3-mile-high mountain.

In earlier ventures to Mars, spacecraft have either bounced to the surface cocooned in giant airbags or made the trip atop a rocket-powered descent stage. But neither approach was an option for NASA's Curiosity rover, the centerpiece of the $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory mission.

Tipping the scales at one ton, the nuclear-powered Curiosity, a rolling laboratory equipped with a suite of state-of-the-art cameras and instruments, is too massive to use airbags like the ones that cushioned the landings of NASA's much smaller Pathfinder and the hugely successful Spirit and Opportunity rovers.

While a legged lander could do the trick, powerful braking rockets would be needed to get Curiosity to the surface. The sheer size of the descent stage would result in a daunting engineering challenge: get a bulky rover safely down to the surface from a perch many feet above the ground atop its lander.

"This rover is 900 kilograms, it is a beast, it is the size of a car," said Steve Sell, an entry, descent and landing engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "So you're trying to land something very heavy, so that means you need sizable engines."

More powerful rocket engines could kick up billowing clouds of dusty debris as the lander approached touchdown "so you tend to want to keep the engines farther away from the surface," Sell said.
"That makes you want to have longer legs, and having longer legs means your center of gravity is higher and then it's much easier to tip over," he said. "Or you need to be very wide. It tends to drive you [to a] larger and larger [lander] in order to do that and be stable."

Then there is the little matter of getting the rover down to the surface after landing.

"Let's say you solved all that and were able to land and you now had to drive a one-ton rover off the top of a platform, either down ramps or some other kind of mechanism," Sell said. "If you were oriented in a way that maybe wasn't favorable to your wheels, like you were tilted to your side, you could slide sideways off the ramps. Maybe there are rocks where the bottoms of the ramps would normally touch and you can't deploy the ramp in the first place."

Armchair Astronomer Discovers Newest Mars Anomaly

David Martines, a California "armchair astronomer" had a YouTube video, which was heading for viral status after he uploaded a zoom in on a white, cylindrical object on Google Earth's Mars Explorer. 

According to Martines, the object ( labeled Bio Station Alpha) is "about 700 feet long and 150 feet wide." adding,  "because I'm just assuming that something lives in it or has lived in it."

His video was uploaded May 28, 2011.  After having been watched over 750,000 times, as of today the video has been removed.  I wonder why...

Fox News reported a NASA spokesman speculated that "Bio Station Alpha" is most likely a glitch in the digital imaging, or an unusual feature on the surface of the planet -- and not a Martian base.

Martines believes he knows differently.

"It's very unusual in that it's quite large, it's over 700 feet long and 150 feet wide, it looks like it's a cylinder or made up of cylinders," he said in the video.

"It could be a power station, or it could be a biological containment, or it could be a glorified garage... hope it's not a weapon.

"Whoever put it up there had a purpose I'm sure. I couldn't imagine what the purpose was. I couldn't imagine why anybody would want to live on Mars."

For those of you who have downloaded Google Earth, in Mars Explorer the coordinates of "Bio Station Alpha" are 71 49'19.73"N 29 33'06.53"W

Well, I found Martines' video before it got yanked.  Having watched it, I pulled up Google Earth's Mars Explorer and typed in the coordinates.  I found the same anomaly that he did. 

After downloading and examining photo captures of the anomaly, I have to agree with Martines.  Sorry NASA, it's more like an "unnatural feature" and your "glitch theory" has a big glitch in it.

UFOs over Mars?- Spirit's Mission To Gusev Crater

What appears to be a UFO (or possibly two), can be seen in photos sent back by the Mars rover, "Spirit". It could be a speck of dust, or it could be a craft of some type. If it is a craft, could it be one of ours... or is it an alien vessel?

A tiny speck can be seen in a number of frames sent back from Mars. I downloaded and examined a number of these photos. The speck shows up in slightly different locations in the center portion of the Martian sky (not necessarily in the same spot on the frame), leading me to believe that it could be a craft that might be keeping a wary eye on our little rover.

Of the many photos sent back in this group, one in particular caught my eye. It seems to be a perfectly good photo, yet a large framed area of the sky is blacked out. Below and on the ground near the base of the hill there appears what might be a shadow Could this be a simple glitch, or is NASA covering something up?

Something else I noticed in the same blacked-out photo, is that there is an odd object lying on the ground, to the left. It could be just a rock but the rock appears to have "eye holes", that are perfectly aligned. It looks eerily like a robot head, or ancient Roman helmet. It's oddities like this, that fuel the cover-up conspiracy fires. Here's more tender.






It is my hope that one day soon, we will know the truth behind these and so many other questions, such as "is there life on Mars" and "are aliens visiting us?"
