Last Friday, ABC’s Good Morning America decided to do a Great Taboo story on the cheap. It aired a piece by east Texas affiliate KLTV about an alleged UFO captured by Google Earth cameras in tiny Jacksonville, Tex. It was a whimsical little jellybean that cost nothing to produce. The accompanying ABC blog post indicated another similar UFO had been located on Google Earth in New Mexico.

ABC's Good Morning America made a whoop-de-doo about this lens flare, which led to a worldwide blogosphere phenomenon/CREDIT: Google Earth and Devoid

The dual-UFO story went viral, from The Daily Mail in London to The Pakistan Daily Times. Although critics tendered lens flare as a possible explanation, one “UFO expert” declared “Without question, this is a legitimate craft. It is not a reflection or anything like that. That’s nonsense. I’m actually quite surprised that this is not getting more media attention.”

Actually, it’s hard to imagine how the thing got this far. Within minutes of being shown the Google images, our Herald-Tribune photo chief Mike Lang noodled around the Google Street View imagery and found yet another lens flare “UFO” in Texas — only, it was on the ground, not in the air.

Oh, please.  It's claptrap like this that hurts real UFO research.  I said it before in another post and I will say it again.  It is a lens flare.  You can find examples all over Google Maps Street Views. 

Lens flare is caused by "non-image light" which does not pass (refract) directly along its intended path.  Instead, this light reflects internally on lens elements multiple times, before finally reaching the film, or digital sensor.

Flare-inducing light sources include the sun, artificial lighting and even a full moon, or other brightly lit surfaces.

Lens flares can take on different shapes, depending on the camera lens and aperture settings.  The best way to avoid lens flares, are to use filters, lens hoods, or simply don't take photos with the camera pointed towards a bright light source.

"A friend of ours told us about a light in the sky between Ave P and University.. between 80th and 95th in Lubbock, Texas. When he called us we video taped this along with some pictures. There was no sound and it kept flasbing on and off. Several of our neighbors witnessed it. We borrowed their binoculars and you could see red, blue, and green bright lights. Please comment if anyone knows what this is."

A witness wrote and said that as the object passed over him, he was able to see that it is a remote controlled  glider.

The witness does not elaborate in this report, that was submitted to MUFON.

Lack of information and the alleged photographic "proof" leave a lot to be desired.

Upon examination of the photo, it appears that the direction of the sun and the shading of the building do not match the highlighted area of the object.

Assessment: Evidence is inconclusive. -Sunny

The Devil's in the Dust : The Arizona Haboob UFOs - Mystery Solved

The mystery of the two "orbs" being chased by the dust storm (known as an "haboob"), has been solved.  Although the CNN video of the Arizona dust storm has gone viral, ultimately this is a case of mistaken identity.  Those orbs are airplanes racing ahead of the storm, preparing to land at Tempe, Arizona's airport.

Well, they were unidentified for a little while but now it's time to put this one to rest. -SW

Examiner.com- The unidentified flying objects seen on a live CNN broadcast of the massive dust storm in Arizona have finally been identified.  In the original video that aired live on CNN on Tuesday, July 5, 2011, two flying objects on the left side of the screen could not be positively identified as helicopters or airplanes.

Now, a new video has surfaced in which the objects can clearly be seen and identified putting the UFO speculation to rest.

According to a local Arizona news station, the mysterious objects were nothing more than airplanes trying to outrun the dust storm (technically known as a haboob).  KTAR reports: "Sadly for UFO hunters, the specks of light visible in the video turned out to be airplanes trying to outrun the storm for the shelter of Phoenix Sky Harbor."

ABC15 has an interesting video where they clearly show that the UFOs are not so unidentifiable after all.  You can watch their video on the left side of this page, or by clicking on the following link: Airplanes fly in the face of dust storm; objects were previously thought by some to be UFOs.  The first object is clearly identifiable as an airplane at the 1:40 mark on the video.

UFO Hoax Planned by "Anonoymous"

Anonymous to hoax UFO reports.

Hacker group Anonymous is turning its attentions from annoying the powerful, to hacking off UFO enthusiasts.

On May 22, after they have washed up after their mum has made them dinner, Anonymous members will flood UFO websites with fake reports of a triangular UFO.

Operation UFO will provide the members of Anonymous with endless hours of entertainment as the story is picked up by the mainstream media and becomes "reality".

The assumption is that the next day the papers will be full of stories sparked by the UFO postings. Ghosttheory has opened a book on whether Fox will run a story linking the UFO with terrorism, or claiming that Obama's birth certificate was signed by ET.

If you are serious about the UFO phenomena, then don't do what the group "Anonymous" asks.  Um, besides, everyone knows that triangles are the new "stealth" aircraft, right?
